Pilpasuo protected area and hiking trails

Pilpasuo's natural environment is a diverse northern experience. Located about 20 km from the centre of Oulu, Pilpasuo is worth a day trip for the whole family. The extensive marshland area with its different types of forest is a 3000-year-old seaside meadow. One of its special features is the Ala-Korkiakanka ancient beach. It is a quarry area that was a small island in the sea about 6500 years ago.

The seasonal variation highlights the diversity of Pilpasuo. In summer, the walking trails attract day hikes and campfires, while in autumn the area is a favourite with berry pickers and mushroom pickers. In winter, the slopes invite northern lights enthusiasts, and in spring, visitors can ski or snowshoe around Pilpasuo. There are two nature trails with long poles, along which you can challenge yourself with nature-themed challenges. The tasks stimulate the senses and make you experience familiar things in nature in a new way.

The shorter ring trail is particularly suitable for young children and is 1 km long. You can identify it by the red markings. The longer 7 km sensory trail contains 8 tasks and is marked in blue. There are also campfire sites along the trails.
